Review: The Institute

The Institute The Institute by Stephen King
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Quite possibly the best Stephen King book I've read in a long time... and that's saying something considering how great The Outsider and Sleeping Beauties were. It's not "Horror" but much of it tells a horrible tale... and we have no choice except to be drawn in to the story as we meet characters we can't help but care about.

The Institute has obvious parallels to Firestarter with evil(?) forces tracking and eventually kidnapping children with paranormal abilities. A much darker story than Firestarter, it diverges in how those children are treated, how their abilities are enhanced and exploited, and how much broader the conspiracy to maintain secrecy is.

Once again, King bring us into his world, and a fantastic, and really creepy, world it is.

Review: Dragon's Code

Dragon's Code Dragon's Code by Gigi McCaffrey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reading Dragon's Code was like a trip down someone else's memory lane. In many ways this was like hearing about the adventures of friends you'd lost touch with over the years. While the broad strokes of Piemur's story were familiar from the original series, Gigi McCaffrey did a wonderful job filling in details that hadn't been provided by her mother Anne.
